The miracle was first that the Japanese worked like dogs to pull themselves up. The second miracle was the kindness of US military leaders such as Gen. MacArthur who took away the combatants weapons and gave them shovels instead of stating, “OK – the war is over. Take your guns and go home” as the US has done in Iraq, his excellency said, “OK you are still in the military but now you are in the Corps. of Engineers. Your family will still be fed, but we are going to rebuild your country” And that is what happened. Why our “leaders” are not able to learn from history is beyond my understanding. They think no one has gone through what they are going through and instead of looking back to see what worked in the past, they invent their own policy and press forward – often with tragic results. If only MacArthur were alive today. Most tragic, however, is that Japan has abandoned their core principles (as the US has) and are suffering the consequences.
